History of the Vocationist Sisters in India
The term Vocationists comprises two religious congregations namely the The Society of Divine Vocations (SDV) and The Sisters of Divine Vocations (SDV) respectively for men and women. Both congregations aim the integral service of the vocations to the religious life in general and to priesthood in particular. The ultimate goal of the congregation is the Universal Sanctification through the sanctification of every soul and the union with the Most Holy Trinity through the perfection of charity towards God and neighbor. Presently Vocationist Sisters works in 11 countries. The Sisters of Divine Vocations came to India on 21st June, 1994 when Mother Giovannina Di Francia was the Mother General. Sr. Antonietta Colafemmina (present Mother General) and Sr. Anna Maria were the pioneers in the history of Vocationist Sisters, India. The then Archbishop Mar Joseph Kundukulam welcomed the sisters to the Archdiocese of Trichur. The sisters had their beginning at Madona Nagar, Trichur on 14th May, 1995. Reverend sisters James C.S.C. and Dominic C.S.C belonging to the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity were generous in lending their help for the formation of the Aspirants. On March 8th, 2000 the sisters shifted residence to their first house at Puthur. On May 11th, the same was blessed by Archbishop Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy and thus the first community was formarilly inaugurated. Rev. Sr. Rechele SDV Peluso was the first superior of the community. The founding of the Our Lady Convent for the formation of the candidates (aspirancy, postulancy and novitiate) to the religious life was another remarkable event in their history. It was blessed by the then Archbisop of the archdiocese Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy on November 1st, 2001. This house remains as a place for conducting annual retreats, recollection, vocation guidance and boarding of girls where they can have a prayerful and religious atmosphere. They extend their service also to the caring of children namely, Infant Jesus Day Care. A new stage was marked on May 31st, 2004 when the third community began at Puduruthy, Thrissur which was named as St. Pious Convent. And the same was blessed by then Archbishop of Trichur Mar Andrews Thazhathu. At present the sisters lend their helping hand in the activities of the parish and they run an L.P. School, namely Pious LP school. After two years they were able to open another community in the Northern Kerala in the Archdiocese of Tellichery at Cheemeni in Kasargode district. The same is named after the name of St. Antony and was blessed by the Archbishop Mar George Valiyamattom. In addition to the community at Puthur they run an English Medium High School of CBSE syllabus named Guardian Angels which is known for its outstanding performance and discipline. In the coming years the bishop of Adilabad, Mar Jospeh Kunnath asked to render their service in his diocese. Mother General and the sisters were happy to accept the invitation and started their new community in Andhra Pradesh from June 13th, 2013. At the end of 19 years of service the congregation has 70 Indian Vocationist Sisters working in various parts of the world.
